The suction is built up with the lever and can therefore be dosed finely - more precisely than with any motorised solution, because you feel every stroke yourself. What such a pump does: it draws the nipple into the cup, the tissue swells and becomes considerably more sensitive for a while. You should not suck for longer than a few minutes at a time.
