Closed at the front, open at the sides: the Shorts Clements by Sweet Smile are made mainly of polyester with elastane and come in a matte wetlook finish. A sheer mesh panel runs over each hip, with a ribbon laced through metal rings in a cross pattern. At the front sits a placket with five silver-coloured decorative studs that echo a button fly without opening. The waistband is wide and smooth, the leg opening cut close. How do the shorts fit?

Tighter than ordinary underwear. Wetlook gives less than jersey does, and the elastane only partly makes up for it. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one. The basics on cuts and fit are covered in the guide to men's lingerie and jockstraps.

Can the side lacing be adjusted?

Yes. The ribbon runs freely through the rings and is knotted at the end. Loosen it and the mesh panel opens visibly; pull it tight and the side closes up. Make sure to secure the knot again, otherwise the ribbon slips out of the rings in the wash.

How do I care for wetlook?

Cold hand wash, then dry flat and out of the sun. No tumble dryer, no iron and no fabric softener, because the coated surface tolerates neither heat nor residue. Undo the lacing before washing so the rings do not get bent out of shape.

What goes with them?
