The key difference is not the cleaning method, it is the surface. Silicone, glass and metal are non-porous – they genuinely can be made germ-free. Silicone without electronics even tolerates hot water. TPE, TPR and Cyberskin are porous: something always stays behind in the microscopic cavities, however thoroughly you clean. Toys like that are personal items – use a condom when sharing, and replace them after one to two years of regular use.

Just as important is what does not belong on a toy. Scented soap and washing-up liquid irritate the mucous membrane and leave a film. Alcohol and disinfectants attack TPE and leave silicone dull and tacky over time. And rechargeable models only go under water if they are explicitly marked waterproof – otherwise a damp cloth is enough, and the charging contact stays dry.
