Why does an anal toy need a base?

Because the sphincter pulls inward whatever it can grip, and the rectum has no natural limit. The base stays outside and prevents exactly that. A toy without a base does not belong in anal use.

Which lubricant fits?

A water-based one, and plenty of it - nothing gets wet by itself anally. Silicone gel does not suit silicone, it attacks the surface. The selection is under water-based lubricant, thicker ones under anal and fisting lubricant.

How do you start?

With time and in a relaxed position. The sphincter opens by itself when given the chance; pushing achieves the opposite. If it hurts, stop - do not push through.
