These Peerless handcuffs by Steel join two cuffs of solid stainless steel with a strikingly long link chain. Each cuff is a smooth, flat bow with rounded edges and a small lock box where the chain attaches. Thanks to the long connection the hands stay cuffed but have clearly more room than with the usual short chains. They are opened with a small key. How do you put them on?

With a finger’s width of room. Close each cuff only so far that a finger still fits between metal and wrist, because too tight presses on nerves and blood vessels. After putting them on, check that the cuff does not tighten further when you move; if it does, open it and put it on again.

What do you need to watch for safety?

The key, circulation and a stop signal. Before closing, put the key in a fixed place within reach, because steel cannot be cut open in an emergency. Check regularly that hands and fingers stay warm, mobile and normally coloured, and open at once at tingling or numbness. Whoever is cuffed is never left alone and does not stay in the same position for long. A stop signal agreed beforehand has to work without free hands.

What can you do with the long chain?

Run it round a fixed point. If you run the chain round a bedpost, the cuffed person stays lying down and can still turn a little. The chain never takes body weight in the process, and nobody is ever suspended from it.

How do you keep them in good shape?

Wipe, dry, keep the key with them. After play you wipe cuffs and chain with a damp cloth and dry both thoroughly, the lock box in particular. Stainless steel does not rust. Always keep the key together with the handcuffs.
