What is a martinet?

A whip with many narrow straps instead of a single one. The name comes from French. Because the straps land together, a stroke spreads over a larger area and stings more broadly instead of cutting at one point.

What does the ring between handle and straps mean?

The bundle is not fixed rigidly to the handle but falls back loosely after every stroke. So you lead the whip with an even swing, not with short, hard movements. Grip the flat leather handle with your whole hand so that it does not slip away from you mid-swing. Check the ring and rivet before each use.

Where may the strokes land?

Only on well-padded areas, meaning the buttocks and the backs of the thighs. Kidneys, spine, head, neck, face, joints, belly and genitals stay off limits. Start with light strokes and build up slowly. Agree on a stop signal beforehand that also works without words, and keep an eye on the skin: once it breaks, you stop.
