In Germany, carnival season opens on 11 November at 11:11 a.m., and until Ash Wednesday, dressing up needs no reason at all. That also makes it a good excuse for the private part of the evening. There is just one problem for the erotic costume that no product page mentions: carnival mostly happens in winter, and it happens outdoors.

Halloween is about a single night. The carnival season, on the other hand, stretches over weeks: gala evenings, Women's Carnival Day, street parades, Rose Monday. So a costume has to work more than once, and you often wear it from the morning on, among friends, colleagues and neighbours. What works there is not automatically what you want to wear later for two.

• For indoors: The actual costume stays under your coat or in your bag and only comes out when you want it to.

A costume alone is not yet role play. It only becomes that when the character wants something. This overview helps you choose:

🤝 A costume is not an invitation

Carnival lowers inhibitions, that is what it is for. All the more reason to be clear about one thing: a skimpy outfit says nothing about what someone wants. The traditional peck on the cheek is one thing, anything beyond that needs a clear yes, even in the crowd. Anyone too drunk to answer clearly cannot consent either. In that case, you postpone the game until the next day.

As a couple, three short agreements before the party are worthwhile:

1. What is okay today? Flirting, dancing, a peck on the cheek: say where your limits are beforehand instead of arguing about it the next morning.
2. How do we know we want to leave? An agreed signal saves you a discussion in all that noise.
3. How do we step out of the role? Anything with a clear power imbalance calls for a safeword that does not come up in any scene.

If you are going out without a steady partner, pack some condoms. They fit in any coat pocket.

🧵 Size, skin and the day after

After a night out, every costume smells of the pub. The gentlest way to clean it is by hand at 30 degrees, with delicate detergent and no fabric softener. It does not belong in the dryer, which ruins the elastic.

No. They are costume handcuffs that close and open easily and are not meant to withstand any resistance. As a prop, they are perfectly fine. For real bondage play, there are restraints and cuffs. The rule there: agree on everything beforehand and never leave the restrained person alone.
