An anal douche does one thing, and misunderstanding it thoroughly is the most common mistake: it rinses out the last section of the bowel, no more. Anyone who feels pain or sees blood stops and waits a few days - that is not a sign to do it better but one to leave it. Lukewarm tap water, nothing else. Soap, salt and shower gel irritate the mucous membrane; water that is too hot or too cold does too - it should feel tepid, not warm.

How often can you do this?

Not as a daily habit. Regular rinsing washes away the natural protective layer as well. Before the occasion yes, on principle no.

How long beforehand?

Half an hour to an hour. Water can still run out right afterwards - planning for that time spares the unease.
