The Bind & Tie from the Merci range by Doc Johnson is a three-strand twisted rope in black hemp; it comes laid into a hank that is wrapped in the middle with the rope itself. Rope is the oldest way to restrain someone and the one that asks for the most practice. What mainly makes the difference between beautiful and dangerous is the load: it spreads over several wraps rather than one. Rope never goes around the neck, not even loosely. Hemp grips better than cotton and therefore slips less in the wrap. Two notes belong with natural fibre. New hemp is stiff and smells of plant; both settle once the rope has run through your hands a few times, and stray fibres can be singed off carefully. And before every use the rope runs through your fingers once: where it thins or opens up, it carries no more load. How long does a rope have to be?

A few metres are enough for wrists or ankles; for chest and torso it quickly becomes eight to ten. That is why the same product comes in several lengths: better a piece too long than one wrap too few.

Which knot holds without cutting in?

One that does not tighten further under tension. Anything that pulls closer when you pull does not belong on a wrist. Two fingers must fit between rope and skin, always.

What should be within reach?

Scissors that open everything in seconds if needed. And whoever is tied up is never left alone.

How is it cared for?

Store it dry, loosely coiled rather than tightly wound. If you want to wash the rope, wash it cold and let it dry lying flat.
