How far may it be inflated?

Considerably less than the bulb allows. Two or three strokes, then wait - and in the mouth that counts double, because the jaw cannot give way.

Why does the release valve matter?

Because an inflated gag does not come out. Let the air out first, then take it off - in that order and not the other way round.

What needs watching with latex?
