How tight may the cuffs be?

There must always be room for at least one finger between cuff and wrist. On the inside of the joint, nerves run just under the skin, and lasting pressure there can cause numbness that does not go away straight away. If the hand tingles, turns cold or goes pale, unlock at once.

What is off limits when restraining someone?

Never leave anyone restrained alone, not even briefly. Never jerk on the chain, and do not fix the handcuffs to bedposts, radiator pipes or other solid objects: a sudden pull drives the narrow edge of the cuff into the joint with full force.
