Their most important detail sits on top of the lock housing: a quick release that lets the cuffs open even without a key. A mislaid key is therefore no problem, and in an emergency the hand is free again quickly. Two keys are also included for normal use. How do you use the quick release?

Try it out before the handcuffs go on a wrist for the first time. That way you both know where it is and how much pressure it needs. Keep a key ready anyway; two ways of opening are better than one.

How tight may they be?

At least one finger must fit between steel and skin. On the inside of the wrist, nerves lie just under the skin, and a cuff that is too tight presses exactly there. Numbness, tingling or a cold, pale hand mean: open at once.

What is off limits when restraining someone?

Leaving anyone restrained alone, even for a moment. Likewise fixing the cuffs to bed frames, radiators or other solid objects, and any jerking on the chain: a sudden pull presses the edge of the cuff into the joint, and the steel does not give at all.
