How does the ratchet work?

Inside the housing a catch engages the teeth on the bow. Push the bow further in and the cuff gets tighter; going back only works with the key. So close slowly, notch by notch.

How do you open them?

Put the key into the hole on the housing and turn it. The catch then releases the bow, and it can be swung out of the housing.

Hands in front or behind?

In front is more comfortable and allows more movement, especially for the first few times. Behind the back puts more strain on shoulders and wrists, and anyone lying restrained like that easily presses the cuffs tighter with their own weight.

What about the keys?

Put one key visibly within reach before the first cuff closes, and keep the second in another fixed place. If one gets lost, the spare is always there.

What do you watch for while wearing them?

One finger fits between bow and wrist. Keep checking that the hands are warm and mobile; at tingling, numbness, cold, discolouration or pain, unlock at once. Nobody hangs their body weight on the cuffs, nobody restrained is left alone, and a stop signal is agreed beforehand.
