How do you open them?

With the key: it fits the keyhole on the lock case and frees the bow. Try it once before the handcuffs close for the first time, so nobody has to search in an emergency.

How tight may they sit?

Close the bows only so far that a finger’s width of room remains between bow and wrist. Check regularly how the hands feel and what colour they are; tingling, cold, numbness or pale skin mean: open them at once. Do not lie on the cuffed hands and do not stay in the same position for long.

What else is part of staying safe?

The keys are within reach before the cuffs go on, in a place you both know. Agree on a stop signal beforehand that works without words, such as dropping an object. Whoever is tied up is never left alone. No restraint ever goes around the neck, and handcuffs are not meant for suspension.
