How tightly may they sit?

So that two fingers fit underneath, and not a millimetre tighter. Metal cuffs tighten further when tugged, which is why many pairs have a double lock that prevents exactly that. If there is one, engage it before you start, not after. Open them at once if there is numbness, coldness or pale skin.

What if the key is lost?
