What is a hogtie?

A restraint in which wrists and ankles are brought together behind the back, usually lying face down or on the side with the legs bent. The cross holds the four cuffs together at one point without any rope having to be knotted.

How do you attach the cuffs?

The cross has D-rings at all four ends and no snap hooks of its own. So you need wrist and ankle cuffs with snap hooks or clips that you hook into the D-rings. Choose cuffs whose snap hooks open with one hand, and try opening them before anyone is tied up; that way you release the restraint quickly in an emergency.

What do you watch for during the restraint?

A hogtie is a demanding position and is therefore kept short. Shoulders and knees are not overstretched: hands and feet rest loosely together, not pulled tight. Lying face down, breathing must stay free; if anything presses on the ribcage or breathing gets hard, roll onto the side at once or release. Check regularly that hands and feet stay warm and well supplied with blood and that one finger fits under every cuff; with tingling, numbness, cold or pale skin you release. Do you have to use all four D-rings?

Wipe PVC with a damp cloth and a little mild soap and let it air-dry, away from radiators and sun. Only dab the embroidered chevrons carefully instead of rubbing them.
