What is a hogtie?

A restraint in which wrists and ankles are brought together behind the back, usually lying face down or on the side with the legs bent. The cross holds the four cuffs together at one point without any rope having to be knotted.

What do you watch for during the restraint?

A hogtie is a demanding position and is therefore kept short. Shoulders and knees are not overstretched: hands and feet rest loosely together, not pulled tight. Lying face down, breathing must stay free; if anything presses on the ribcage or breathing gets hard, roll onto the side at once or release. Check regularly that hands and feet stay warm and well supplied with blood and that one finger fits under every cuff; with tingling, numbness, cold or pale skin you release. Whoever is tied up is never left alone, you agree a stop signal beforehand that also works without words, and safety scissors lie within reach.

How do you release it quickly?

Pressing the lever opens each snap hook, and hands and feet are separated at once. Practise this once without any restraint so that it works in an emergency.

Do you have to use all four snap hooks?

No. With only the two wrist cuffs attached, the hands stay linked behind the back and the legs are free. This lets you try the position gently before the feet are added.

How do you care for the cross?

Wipe the straps with a damp cloth and let them air-dry, away from radiators and sun; do not rub the shimmering surface with abrasives. Rub the fittings dry. Store it hanging or lying loosely, without sharp creases.
