Why place the suction cup first?

Because it needs a tight rim, and that is harder to achieve once something sits inside. In the reverse order the cup shifts while inserting. Two steps one after another are easier than both at once.

Do I really need only one hand?

After placing it, yes; the device largely holds itself through its shape and the suction. During more vigorous movement a guiding hand helps. Holding two devices falls away in any case.

What separates blue from the other colours?

Only the colouring; technology and measurements are the same. Blue with a grey element looks coolest, burgundy darkest, forest green most unusual.

How do I clean the device?

With warm water and toy cleaner, with an eye on the gap beneath the tongue. That is where things collect most readily. Then let it dry in the open before putting it away.
