A massage candle by Ouch! in a black metal tin whose lid carries the white Ouch! star. The cream-white candle is made of soy wax and coconut wax with essential oil. Once it has burned for a while, a layer of melted wax collects around the wick, which you use as warm massage oil after blowing out the flame. How do you go about the massage?

Let the candle burn until a liquid layer has formed, then blow out the flame. Wait a moment and test the warmth with a drop on the inside of your wrist. Only when it feels pleasant do you put some wax into your palm and spread it with long, calm strokes over back, shoulders or legs.

What do you watch for with skin and heat?

The wax never goes straight from the burning candle onto the skin, and the tin can be hot after burning. Essential oils can irritate sensitive skin: test the wax on a small patch of skin before the first massage and wait to see that it stays calm. It has no place on irritated or broken skin or on mucous membranes.

Can you use it as lubricant?

No. The wax is meant for massaging the skin, not as a lubricant, and fats and oils can damage latex condoms. For intimate moments, reach for water-based lubricant.

What applies while it burns?

Put the tin on a firm, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, bedding and anything flammable, and never leave the candle burning unattended. Children and pets keep their distance. Trim the wick to a few millimetres before each lighting so the flame produces less soot.
