How far does the remote reach?

Across the room, not across the house. The radio link works over a few metres - plenty for the person opposite in bed, not enough for the next room.

Does the suction cup really hold?

On a smooth surface it does. Tile, glass and varnished wood carry it; on grout lines, tile joints and rough paint it comes loose as soon as there is any pull.
