The Shibari Suspension Ring Triskelion from the Steel range by Shots is a flat ring of black-coated steel for rope work. Inside it, three curved spokes run from the outer rim to the centre and meet there; together with the outer ring they form the three-part triskelion. This creates three equal sections and plenty of points where ropes can be laid in, wrapped and knotted. It is typically used as the centre of a harness or as a connecting piece where several strands of rope come together. The bar is round and smooth so that the rope glides cleanly over it. May you suspend someone from it?

Only with experience, training and a suspension point built exactly for that purpose. There is no load rating for this ring, so it is never the only load-bearing part a person hangs from. A hook in a plasterboard ceiling or a door frame does not hold a body; whether a point holds is decided by a professional, not by gut feeling. Anyone who has not yet learnt suspension bondage under instruction uses the ring on the floor as a centre point for the ropes.

What do you watch for when tying?

Circulation, nerves and free breathing. Ropes never go round the neck and are not pulled tight over joints or on the inside of the upper arms, because nerves lie close under the skin there. Check regularly that hands and feet stay warm and feel normal; tingling, numbness or cold mean untie at once. Never leave a tied person alone, keep safety scissors within reach and agree on a stop signal beforehand.

How do you look after it?

With a damp cloth and a little mild soap. The black coating looks best if you avoid scouring agents and hard brushes. Before every session check the ring for scratches, burrs or chipped spots where a rope could catch or fray, and store it dry.
