Shaving, Waxing or Epilating – Hair Removal Compared

Rasur, Waxing oder Epilierer – Enthaarung im Vergleich

Smooth, trimmed or left alone – that is a matter of taste. The interesting question is how the hair is supposed to go: every method asks a different price, one in time, the next in pain, the third in patience with irritated skin. This article puts the five common routes side by side. What you need for the bathroom versions is in our intimate care range.

🪒 Shaving – fast, cheap, short-lived

A blade cuts the hair at skin level. That is why shaving takes minutes – and why the stubble is back within one to three days: what sits below the surface simply keeps growing.

The most common mistake is not the wrong blade, it is dry skin. A shaving cream puts a film between blade and skin. The Intimate Caress in Coconut Pineapple and the Passionate Pomegranate version are the same line, only the scent differs. Everything about pH value, razor burn and aftercare is covered in our intimate care guide.

🧴 Depilatory cream – same length, a different edge

Depilatory cream does not cut, it dissolves the hair chemically just below the surface. That usually lasts a few days longer than shaving, and the regrowing tip is rounded instead of sharply cut – which is why it feels less prickly.

What matters is that the product is meant for this part of the body. The Hot intimate hair removal cream says „specially for the intimate area" and „unisex" on the tube, with a contact time of three to at most ten minutes and aloe vera, panthenol and jojoba oil added. Two rules hold without exception: patch-test a small spot first, and never exceed the stated time. Mucous membranes are off limits.

🍯 Waxing and sugaring – out by the root

Here the hair is pulled out with the root. That is why the result lasts weeks rather than days: an entirely new hair has to grow, and it comes back one at a time instead of as a closed field of stubble. The price is the pain, worst the first time.

Both methods need a few millimetres of length – too short and the paste has nothing to grip. If you try it yourself, start on a small area: in the intimate area the skin is thinner and the hair sits more firmly than on a leg.

🔌 Epilator – tweezing at speed

An epilator does mechanically what wax does: it grips each hair and pulls it out. The result resembles waxing, there is no appointment to book, but one session takes longer and the first few times are uncomfortable. Because the new hair has to push through the skin again, the risk of ingrown hairs is raised – what helps is in our article on ingrown hairs.

⚡ Laser and IPL – about the word „permanent"

Laser and IPL work through the pigment in the hair and only catch hairs in their growth phase. That is why it is never one session but always a series. The honest term is „permanent hair reduction", not removal: fewer and finer is the goal, bare skin is not a promise. How well it works depends on the contrast between hair and skin. In the intimate area this belongs in trained hands and into a consultation first.

📊 The five methods side by side

MethodLasts roughlyPainEffort
Shaving1–3 dayslowminutes, at home
Depilatory creama few daysnone, but risk of irritationwaiting out the contact time
Waxing / sugaringweekshigh, decreasingappointment or practice
Epilatorweekshigh at firsta longer session
Laser / IPLmonths, in a seriesmediumseveral appointments

The timings shift with your own hair growth – read them as an order of magnitude, not as a promise.

🧽 What stays the same after every method

Blade, cream or wax: the skin afterwards is irritated, and what it needs barely differs. Exfoliating keeps the top layer permeable so new hairs do not turn sideways – the Scratch Me All exfoliant is meant for the body and the outer intimate area, once or twice a week, but not on the day of hair removal. For cleaning, something mild is enough, such as the Organic Fresh cleansing foam, a care foam with 99 percent natural ingredients that is not rinsed off.

  • Straight after: no tight underwear, no swimming pool, no sauna.
  • A day or two later: exfoliate, then moisturise.
  • If there is friction in bed, use lubricant – which one agrees with you is sorted out in our lubricant guide.
  • Red, painful pustules that do not settle: have them looked at. This article is no substitute for seeing a doctor.

❓ Frequently asked questions

💡 Does shaved hair grow back thicker?

No. A blade changes nothing about the root or the growth. What feels thicker is the blunt cut edge – removed by the root, the hair returns with its fine tip and feels softer.

🕒 How long does hair need to be for waxing?

A few millimetres. Too short and the paste cannot grip it, too long and it hurts more than necessary. Switching over from shaving means letting it grow for a while first – the most awkward part of the change.

🧪 Do I have to patch-test a depilatory cream?

Yes. One small spot, wait 24 hours, then do the area. And the stated contact time is an upper limit, not a guideline.

🤷 And if I remove nothing at all?

Then that is a decision too, not neglect. How strongly such images work is covered in our article on body image and sexuality; that body hair is explicitly part of the appeal for some people is shown in the piece on body hair as a fetish.

✅ Conclusion

It comes down to a single trade: the shorter the procedure, the shorter the result. Shaving is done in minutes and over in days, wax and epilator take nerve and last weeks, laser needs a series. Give a method two rounds before you write it off – and remember that the care afterwards decides more than the tool does.
