It starts harmlessly: an itch that will not stop, then burning, and suddenly what used to feel good hurts. Thrush is unpleasant, but it is neither rare nor anything to be ashamed of. The question that follows is almost always the same – do we have to stop now? The short answer: during treatment, yes, for practical reasons. The longer one is below, along with what helps afterwards – a neutral water-based lubricant, for instance, that brings no fragrance with it.
First, and this is not a formality: this article does not replace a visit to a doctor. Itching in the intimate area has many possible causes and a yeast infection is only one of them. Anyone affected for the first time, pregnant, running a fever or in pain, or not improving after a few days belongs in a surgery and not in a blog. We are writing about everything around it, not about the treatment.
🔬 What falls out of balance
Yeasts are nothing foreign – in many people they are simply part of the normal flora. They only become a problem when the environment shifts and they multiply more than usual. That is also why thrush is not a classic sexually transmitted infection: you do not necessarily catch it from someone, and nobody did anything wrong.
What disturbs the balance varies from person to person. Antibiotics, hormonal changes, too much washing with soap and constant moisture come up often. Which is exactly why excessive intimate hygiene is the most common well-meant mistake – our intimate care guide explains why less is more here. It has nothing to do with cystitis, even if the two can feel similar: that one sits in the urinary tract and is caused by bacteria.
⏸️ Why the break makes sense
Three reasons, all practical, none of them moral:
- The mucous membrane is irritated. Friction on inflamed tissue hurts and delays things settling down. That alone is reason enough.
- Back and forth. Even though it is not a typical STI, it can be passed on. Partners often notice little or nothing, and then it travels between you.
- Cream and condoms. The leaflets of many creams and pessaries carry a note that they can damage latex. If you are using one, read that paragraph yourself rather than relying on a condom that is holding up less well than you think.
🧴 If you sleep together anyway
It happens, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The rule is then: no additional irritation. Flavoured gels, warming and cooling effects and numbing additives are the wrong choice right now – fragrance and warming agents are the most common reason a gel stings in the first place.
Neutral here really means neutral. The JoyDivision AQUAglide in the 50 ml tube states on the tube that it is kind to skin and mucous membranes, water-soluble and fat-free, latex- and condom-friendly and pH-optimised – with no flavour, no warming or cooling effect and no numbing additives. The 100 ml Aqua lubricant is the larger alternative; being water-based it attacks neither latex nor silicone. If your skin reacts easily, try a new gel on the inside of your elbow first – there is more on tolerance in our lubricant guide.
And numbing products have no place here. Pain in this situation is a warning signal, not a minor detail to be suppressed.
🧼 Do not forget the toys
This is the part most often overlooked. Anything that was used gets cleaned before it is used again – otherwise the whole thing starts over once treatment ends. Thorough means lukewarm water and mild soap; a spray such as the 100 ml Intimate & Toy Cleaner is the quick option in between, not a replacement for the sink.
With sensitive materials the label is worth a look: the 250 ml Touché toy cleaner is explicitly alcohol-free, and that is not a marketing word – alcohol dries out silicone, TPE and jelly until the surface cracks. A cracked surface is precisely what is hard to get clean.
After that, drying is what counts, because moisture is the real problem: nothing goes damp into the drawer, but dry and separate – a 35 cm storage bag is enough for that. And a cleaner does not replace a fresh condom over the toy when two people use the same one. Everything on cleaning is in our care guide.
📋 What pauses and what carries on
| During treatment | Why |
|---|---|
| Penetration | friction on irritated tissue, transmission possible |
| Flavoured or warming gels | extra irritation, the most common cause of stinging |
| Numbing products | they mask a warning signal |
| Shared toys | they travel back and forth until they are clean |
| Closeness without penetration | nothing speaks against it |
❓ Frequently asked questions
🕒 How long should we wait?
For as long as the treatment lasts, plus a few days until the itching and burning have gone. The exact figure is in the package leaflet or comes from your doctor – follow that rather than a blog.
👥 Does my partner need treating too?
That is for a doctor to decide, not for us. If there are symptoms on the other side, or if it keeps coming back, it is usually discussed. Treating someone on suspicion alone is not a good idea.
💧 Is lubricant helpful right now or harmful?
A neutral water-based gel reduces friction, which is exactly what you want to avoid on irritated tissue. What makes it harmful are the additives: flavour, warming, cooling, numbing. The plainer the ingredients list, the better.
🚿 Does washing more often help?
Probably not. Frequent washing with soap and vaginal douching disturb the environment further. Clear water on the outside is enough; anything beyond that should be discussed rather than experimented with.
✅ Conclusion
Thrush is a reason for a break, not a reason for a guilty conscience. The treatment belongs in medical hands – and this article is no substitute for it. What you can do yourselves: avoid adding irritation, switch to neutral gels, put the toys away clean and dry, and wait a few days longer than feels necessary. Closeness is expressly allowed; penetration is the part that is not.
