You rarely notice it in the moment, but afterwards: the condom is in shreds or has slipped off, and your head goes blank for a few seconds. First things first – there is a time window for everything, and none of them closes in the next five minutes. This article sorts out what matters when, in which order, and where to turn. In Germany the morning-after pill is available at pharmacies without a prescription, with two active ingredients: levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate. It postpones ovulation and therefore works more reliably the sooner it is taken. How long it remains an option depends on the active ingredient: according to the BZgA site familienplanung.de levonorgestrel is intended for up to 72 hours after intercourse, ulipristal acetate for up to 120 hours – three days against five. Which of the two suits your case depends on where you are in your cycle, and that is exactly what the pharmacy consultation is for. One detail that is easily missed: anyone who vomits within three hours of taking it needs a fresh tablet.

This is where the clock matters most. If there is a genuine HIV risk, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent an infection – four weeks of medication that has to start as soon as possible. Deutsche Aidshilfe gives the frame: ideally within two hours, otherwise preferably within 24 hours, 48 hours at the latest; whether anything is still gained up to 72 hours is disputed among experts. PEP is not available at every emergency room but at specialised clinics around the clock, and during the day at HIV practices – Aidshilfe maintains the list itself.

Everything else can wait and should still happen: testing for chlamydia or gonorrhoea comes after a few weeks, or sooner if symptoms appear. An HIV test is only truly conclusive after six weeks to three months, depending on the method. 🔍 Why condoms tear – and what prevents it

A condom almost never bursts without a reason. Four causes cover most cases:

• Too little lubricant. Friction without moisture is the most common cause of all, and even more so during anal sex. Generous is the right amount here.
• Handling and storage. Squeeze the air out of the tip, mind your fingernails and rings, do not open the wrapper with your teeth, do not carry it in your back pocket for months, and check the expiry date. Two condoms on top of each other are not double protection – they rub each other apart.

🚿 Does showering or rinsing afterwards help?

Showering does no harm, but it does nothing about the actual issue. Specialist services advise against internal douching – it achieves nothing and additionally disturbs the natural protection of the mucous membrane. What helps are the steps above, not water.

🕐 I only noticed hours later – is it too late?

For the morning-after pill it depends on the active ingredient: levonorgestrel is intended for up to three days afterwards, ulipristal acetate for up to five – both work more reliably the sooner they are taken. Tell the pharmacy how long ago it was; that decides what is still an option. With PEP it is the other way round – every hour counts there, and after 48 hours it becomes difficult. When in doubt, call an HIV practice once too often rather than once too little.

💊 What if I am on hormonal contraception anyway?

Then the pregnancy question is usually relaxed – protection from infection is not. The pill, the ring and the IUD guard against pregnancy only; against pathogens, nothing but a barrier helps. That is why combining the two remains sensible with new or changing partners.

📏 Do thin condoms tear more easily?

No. Every condom sold in the EU has to pass the same tests, the ultra-thin ones included. What actually tears is usually the badly sized or the dry one – not the thin one.
