🧵 Wrapping instead of locking

Wraparound restraints work without a lock and without a click mechanism: the band goes around the wrists and holds by itself. That has a practical advantage over metal cuffs – there is no key to lose, and the pressure can be dosed precisely as you put them on.

🤍 Why fabric is kinder

Elastane and nylon give and spread the pull over a wide area. Metal does not: it cuts in at a single point the moment someone pulls. For longer scenes, and for anyone tying someone up for the first time, fabric is by far the friendlier choice.

How tight may I wrap?

Tight enough that two fingers fit between the band and the wrist. That is the classic rule of thumb and it works. If the hands go cold, tingly or pale, it is too tight – then the restraint comes off rather than getting adjusted.

How do you get out quickly in an emergency?

With wraparound restraints, by simply unwinding them, which is quicker than it sounds. Even so, a pair of blunt-tipped scissors belongs within reach at every tying session. Whoever ties stays in the room – nobody is left tied up alone.

How long should a tied-up session last?

A quarter of an hour to begin with. More important than the clock is the position: arms above the head tire quickly, behind the back they load the shoulders. Change the posture before anything goes to sleep.

What needs discussing beforehand?

How do I clean fabric restraints?

By hand with lukewarm water and mild soap, then dry them flat. Not in the tumble dryer – elastane loses its stretch in there. Check the seams from time to time, because frayed fabric will not hold at the moment it matters.

What goes with them?

Does one size really fit everyone?

With wraparound restraints that comes closer to the truth than with rigid cuffs, because you decide how many turns to make. Very slim and very strong wrists can both be secured with them – what counts is the two-finger rule, not the size on the packaging.

Hands in front or behind the back?

In front is the more relaxed option and the right one to start with: you can see your hands, change position and reach them yourself if needed. Behind the back feels more intense but loads the shoulders and should last considerably less time.

What do I do if the hands go to sleep?

Release them immediately and move the arms slowly until the tingling fades. It is not a drama, but it is not something you sit out either. Then put them back on – looser and in a different position.

What else belongs in a good basic kit?

A pair of blunt scissors, something to drink and a blanket for afterwards. The part after the scene is often underrated, but it belongs to it.
