Why a dental dam?

Because oral sex transmits infections too. Herpes, HPV, gonorrhoea and a few others need no intercourse to get around. A dam is the simplest answer to that and the only one that works for oral sex.

How is it used?

Lay it flat, hold it in place with one hand, do not let it slip. A drop of lubricant on the underside makes it more pleasant and keeps it against the skin. Throw it away after use, do not turn it over and do not reuse it.

Can you cut open a condom instead?

In an emergency yes, but it never gets that large and never lies that flat. Anyone who knows it will come to that is better served with a proper dam.

Which lubricant goes with it?

A water-based one, water-based lubricant for example. Oil attacks the film, exactly as with a condom.
