🧻 What a dental dam is

A dental dam is a thin sheet placed between the mouth and the vulva or anus during oral sex. It is not a condom and does not get rolled on; it is laid flat and held with the fingers. That closes exactly the gap a condom is not made for.

🎯 What it is for

For cunnilingus and for rimming. Many people treat both as low risk, but they do transmit pathogens – herpes and HPV for instance, and with rimming intestinal bacteria on top. How do I use it?

Unpack it, lay it flat, hold it at the edges with both hands. It does not need to be stretched – flat is enough. A drop of lubricant on the body side makes the contact considerably more pleasant and stops the dam sliding around as much.

May I turn it over?

No, under no circumstances. Once one side has had body contact, it stays face down. Turning the dam over does not just cancel the protection, it spreads precisely what the dam was meant to hold back. For the same reason: one dam, one person, one use.

How often can I use it?

Once. Like a condom, a dental dam is a single-use item – washing, drying and reusing does not work.

Which lubricant goes with it?

Water-based, if the dam is made of latex. Oil attacks latex and makes it permeable within minutes. The selection is under water-based lubricant; if you like it flavoured, there are variants under flavored lubricant.

What about a latex allergy?

Then no latex product may be used – not even briefly. Check the packaging before you use it, and switch to latex-free alternatives if in doubt. For this item we have no material specification from the manufacturer.

What else belongs to safer sex?

Can I cut one myself?

You can improvise one from a condom cut open, and in a pinch that is better than nothing. A ready-made dam is bigger, evenly thick and does not slide away, though – for planned use it is by far the better option.

Can you even feel anything?

Less is lost than most people fear. The sheet is wafer-thin, takes on warmth quickly and lets pressure through. What is missing is direct skin contact – what arrives is almost everything else.

How do I store dental dams?

Dry, cool and not in a wallet or a glove compartment. Heat and constant pressure take their toll on thin sheets. Watch the expiry date as well – an expired dam tears more easily.
