What does the valve do?

It holds the vacuum that keeps the cup in place and sealed. That same vacuum is why a cup is never simply pulled out: press the rim in briefly first so air can follow, then take it out calmly. Pulling without that step hurts and does not help.

How often does it need emptying?

That depends on the flow, not on the clock. As a rule of thumb menstrual cups are usually worn for no more than twelve hours at a stretch; on heavy days correspondingly sooner. When in doubt the maker's note on the packaging applies.

How is it cleaned?
