The leather paddle by Darkness has a straight, rectangular blade with stitching all round, a narrower handle and a loop at the end of the handle. A paddle lands flat rather than on a single point. How sharp it feels depends mainly on the area: a narrow paddle stings more than a wide one at the same swing. Start light and build up slowly; redness is normal, bruises and broken skin are not. Aim only at the buttocks and the backs of the thighs. The spine, tailbone, kidneys, belly, joints, neck and face are off limits, and experience does not change that. Where may you strike?
