A brief in stretchy material sits close, and all the comfort hangs on that: the pouch at the front has to hold without constricting, and the waistband has to sit without cutting in. Neither shows when trying it on but after two hours sitting down; that is the test no mirror replaces. The fabric of 80 % polyamide and 20 % elastane has two sides few people spell out. The pleasant one: it is thin, stretches in every direction and moves with you instead of pulling; after washing it dries quickly. The other: man-made fibre breathes less well than cotton and takes on odour more readily. For an evening that does not matter, for twelve hours on an office chair it does. This is underwear worn because it appeals, not because it is the most sensible choice for everyday. The piece comes from Anais Men, a label that deliberately treats men's underwear as lingerie. Which size fits?

Lingerie fits differently from maker to maker. With stretchy material the size above is the better choice when in doubt, because one size down does not look tauter but leaves grooves.

How is it washed?

By hand at thirty degrees, without fabric softener, and dried flat. Softener takes the tension out of the elastane and the elastics, and without tension it no longer fits properly.

Is there a matching top?

How is it stored?

Laid loosely and not kept stretched. Elastics go slack when they lie under tension for long.
