What is the difference between mini and normal?

Only the size. Material, shape and handling are the same; the mini version is smaller and is therefore the first choice on lighter days or when the normal size sits too large.

Are three pieces enough?

For trying them out, yes. Three tampons cover a weekend or a few single occasions; anyone who sticks with them moves on to the large pack.

Why is there no retrieval string?

Because the string is the one thing you would see and feel. The foam is squeezed together, inserted with one finger and unfolds again inside. To remove it you reach in with a finger and pull it out.
