Is it suitable for a first toy?

Very much so. It is small enough not to be intimidating, and the lowest speed is restrained enough to find out what you like first. There is plenty of room upwards if the first speeds start to feel too tame.

How firmly should it be pressed on?

Light contact is usually enough. Pressed hard, the vibration spreads into the tissue and feels duller instead of staying on the surface. Try both; the difference is clearer than one speed up.

What if it no longer starts?

Usually the battery is simply empty. Put it on the cable for an hour before assuming a fault, and check that the plug is seated properly. A damp charging socket also stops the current getting through.
