💦 The all-rounder among lubricants

Water-based lubricants simply suit almost everything. They rinse off effortlessly with water, feel pleasantly natural and work with every toy material and with condoms – the safe everyday choice. For an overview of all the varieties, see lubricant.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Gentle on materials: suitable even for sensitive silicone toys.
  • Easy to clean: no stains, no stubborn film.
  • Skin-friendly: ideal for anyone with sensitive skin.
  • Condom-safe: it does not attack latex, unlike oil-based gels.
  • Affordable for everyday use: the cheapest of the three basic types.

🔬 How to spot a good water-based gel

Water-based is not simply water-based. The difference lies in the thickener. Gels built mainly on glycerin or propylene glycol are sweetish, turn tacky after ten to fifteen minutes and draw water out of the mucous membrane – which is exactly where the familiar mild stinging comes from. The technical term for it is osmolality: the WHO recommends values below 1,200 mOsm/kg for lubricants, and body-friendly gels sit below 380 mOsm/kg. Gels thickened with cellulose (hydroxyethylcellulose) instead sit considerably closer to the body and stay smooth for longer.

In practice: a glance at the ingredients list tells you more than any marketing claim. If glycerin appears near the top, the gel will be on the sweet and drying side. Anyone prone to thrush is better off with a glycerin-free gel, because glycerin feeds yeast. And the pH should match where you are using it – vaginally around 3.8 to 4.5, anally closer to neutral. For anal sessions a thick anal lubricant is the better choice anyway, and if you need it by the litre, you mix up J-Lube from powder.

  • ✅ Thickened with cellulose – stays smooth longer, dries out less
  • ✅ Glycerin-free – the calmer choice for sensitive mucous membranes
  • ✅ pH-matched – acidic for vaginal use, neutral for anal use
  • 🚫 Stings or turns tacky quickly – usually too much glycerin

Getting the most out of it

Water-based gels can dry out during longer play – a splash of water brings them back. If you are after something particularly long-lasting, take a look at our silicone lubricants. For more variety there are flavoured lubricants, and combined with condoms you are on the safe side. You will find more on tolerability in our lubricant guide.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why does my gel dry out so quickly?

Because water evaporates – that is by design, not a defect. A splash of water or a little saliva reactivates the gel instead of adding more. If you would rather not reapply at all, silicone lubricant is the better fit.

Does it really work with every toy?

Yes, and that is the main reason it is recommended. With silicone toys, water-based is in fact the only safe choice – gel containing silicone roughens the surface permanently.

And with condoms?

No problem. Only oil-based gels and massage oils make latex porous – water- and silicone-based ones do not. You will find matching condoms with us too.

Why does it sting slightly?

Almost always because of glycerin or propylene glycol, which draw water out of the mucous membrane. A glycerin-free gel with low osmolality solves it in most cases.

Is it suitable when trying to conceive?

Only if it is explicitly labelled sperm-friendly. Ordinary gels can impair sperm motility – there are specially formulated products for this.

How long does it keep?

Unopened, usually one to three years; once opened, use it up within six to twelve months. Do not apply it straight from the bottle – onto your hand first.

How is it delivered?

In neutral packaging that gives no clue as to the contents, and the same applies to the debit on your bank statement. Shipping within Germany is free, with no minimum order value.
