Do the ribs get in the way on insertion?

No, they are shallow and the diameter stays slim. They are meant as texture, not as an obstacle, and the slim core underneath stays unchanged. A little more lubricant than with a plain tube still makes sense, because more of it spreads between the ribs.

How do I use it safely?

With low pressure and lukewarm water. Open the tap only a crack and check the temperature on your hand beforehand, because the bowel gives no warning signal. Several small rounds beat one with a lot of water, with a minute's pause in between, until everything has settled.
