What decides it is the hip circumference at its widest point, not your usual dress size – with goods from Asia in particular, XS to XXL often runs one to two sizes smaller than you are used to. With hold-up stockings the thigh circumference matters too: if the silicone band is too tight it cuts in, and if it is too loose the stocking slips. And garter belts go by the waist measurement, not the hips.

Lace, mesh and microfibre belong in a laundry bag on a delicate 30-degree cycle, or better still washed by hand. Leave out the fabric softener – it attacks elastane, and the fit depends on exactly that. Dry in the air, never in the tumble dryer and not on a radiator. Store fishnets and fine stockings flat or loosely rolled so nothing snags; wipe the silicone bands of hold-ups with clear water now and then, because cream residue destroys the grip.
