Is lubricant needed?

A little on the tip helps. On metal you can use any lubricant; water-based is the easiest to rinse off. A selection is under water-based lubricant.

How is the tube cleaned?

Inside and out with hot water and soap. After use, let hot water run through it for a while, wash the outside and let everything dry before putting it away. Stainless steel can also be boiled.
